what kind of V8? SMC? LS1? AMC 304/360/401? Mopar 318/360? Ford 302/351? lots of options. the simplist one out there is a small-block-chevy swap. plenty of adapters, kits, motor mounts, etc out there for doing it. pretty much a no brainer. just pick up a 4wd catalogue and start writing down part numbers. i've know a few guys that have done it... it's pretty straight forward. if you go with something else, like an AMC, Mopar or Ford swap you'll get into a lot more custom fab stuff, but it can be done. are you looking at swapping transmissions and transfer cases too? what's your budget like? have you sourced a motor yet? junkyard? donor rig? crate motor? more than willing to help... just need some more info from you

just dont go carb. hard to pass emissions, and they blow balls on the trail actually... it's easier to pass emissions with a carb motor than EFI... and it it's easier to set up and wire a carb motor than EFI... if it's set up right, it won't " blow balls" on the trail. not to nit pick, but i've seen a lot of carb-power rigs (and some YJ's with v8 swaps in particular) that run plenty fine on the trail. i've even seen some EFI rigs run like this because they weren't tuned and maintained. but anyway... most SBC's are going to be TBI (trottle body injection) - easier to wire than a multi-port injection engine and more reliable than a carborator in an off-camber situation and cold-starting.

you shouldn't have to worry about emissions, All you have to do is title it as a custom vehicle. You have to take pictures of it before and during and after. Then take the pictures down to DMV and they do the rest.I had it done a few years back with a 4 banger mustang that I swapped a v8.It is really easy if you use a pre emissions motor.
